Website picks Kansas town as national destination ‘Sight of the Week’
Want to know what Roadside America attraction has picked as its Sight Of The Week?
Hint: It’s in Kansas.
Keep in mind, the website chooses the top eight offbeat tourist attractions in the nation to check out. Runners-up this week include the Spirit of Monterey Wax Museum in California, the House on the Rock in Spring Green, Wis.; and the Sasquatch Museum in Cherry Log, Ga.
But, the No. 1 tourist attraction in the nation?
Well, it is the Grassroots Art Center in Lucas, of course.
“Hundreds of miles from the nearest big city, it was the hometown of Sam Dinsmoor, whose controversial Garden of Eden remains America’s oldest surviving yard art environment. Dinsmoor died in 1932 but, according to the Grassroots Art Center, Lucas has since spawned five additional outsider artists. That's got to be a record for a town with a population of 400.” the website said.
This is not the first time for Lucas to be in the spotlight of national fame.
Two years ago, the tiny town was noted for having the nation’s second-best public restroom.
In 2008, town residents banded together because there was a need for a public restroom. It took them four years to raise money and design the facility, which is in the shape of a toilet, billing it as the largest, most blingy toilet in Kansas.
