Bought an e-book? You might get a refund

Kansans who bought electronic books may be eligible to receive a portion of a $3.8 million price-fixing settlement from Apple Inc., Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt announced Monday in a news release.

Distribution of payments is expected to start June 21. The amount each customer will receive depends on the number of books purchased that qualify under the settlement, Schmidt said.

Those who bought books through Sony or Google will receive checks by mail. Amazon, Apple, Barnes & Noble and Kobo customers will see credits to their accounts unless they asked to receive checks. For more information, to www.InYourCornerKansas.org.

The payments settle a lengthy court battle over e-book price fixing.

Kansas was one of 33 state to investigate and sue Apple for conspiring with publishers to artificially inflate e-book prices. Kansans received about $1.4 million in March 2014 from settlements reached with Hachette Book Group, HarperCollins Publishers, Simon & Schuster, Penguin Group and Holtzbrinck Publishers, which also does business as Macmillan.
