Hutchinson police have arrested a man who allegedly fired shots at officers investigating an unrelated crime late Monday night.

Police said 31-year-old Jason Mendoza of Hutchinson was taken into custody at 1 p.m. Tuesday in the 600 block of North Walnut in connection with the shooting. He is charged with three counts of aggravated assault of a law enforcement officer and one count of unlawful discharge of a firearm, police said by e-mail.

Jail records show Mendoza also is being held on a failure to appear count. His bond is set at $65,000.

Officers were in the 300 block of East Second at about 10:15 p.m. Monday when a man in the area fired a handgun at them, Lt. Thad Pickard said in a prepared statement. The officers were not injured.
