Searching for a job can be daunting. Knowing where to search, preparing for an interview and updating your resume can become a full time job in and of itself.

As of December, Kansas had an unemployment rate at 3.8%, ranking 21st among the states with the lowest unemployment rates, according to the U.S. Bureau for Labor Statistics. The median income in Wichita sits at $64,620, according to data from the U.S. Census Bureau. That same data shows 15.9% of Wichita residents are experiencing poverty.

There are many ways to find a job, and if you’re open to working for the government, the state’s job portal could be a good resource for you. As of March 17, Kansas’ job portal had 464 job postings, including 33 in Sedgwick County. Shawnee County has the most openings, listing 136.

We gathered five job postings open now in Sedgwick County that pay more than Wichita’s median income.

Aircraft Mechanic

Agency: Kansas Highway Patrol

Pay: $45/hour

Summary: This position inspects and repairs airplane and helicopter airframes to confirm readiness. Work includes major and minor inspections, as well as repairs and alterations. This position is reviewed by the Federal Aviation Administration for compliance.

Qualifications: Must have at least three years experience as a licensed airframe technician. An aviation inspectors certificate is preferred.

Chief Medical Officer

Agency: Kansas Department for Aging & Disability Services

Pay: A salary of up to $186,000

Summary: This position will supervise physicians at South Central Regional Mental Health Hospital, which includes evaluation of clinical performances and consultations. This person will collaborate with staff and follow state regulations.

Qualifications: Must have completed a residence in a psychiatric residency program and proper certification, an active license and at least five years in psychiatric experience and two years of administrative experience.

Litigation Counsel

Agency: Kansas Corporation Commission

Pay: $75,000 to $90,000

Summary: This position advises the Kansas Corporation Commission’s technical staff on oil and gas industry regulations. This person will evaluate issues and prepare for testimony, pleadings, motion and briefs.

Qualifications: Must have a degree from an accredited law school and be licensed with the Supreme Court of Kansas. Three years of legal experience preferred.

Physical Plan Supervisor Specialist

Agency: Adjutant General

Pay: $37.23/hour

Summary: This person will direct state employees at Kansas Air National Guard and McConnell Air Force Base, and ensure all work is in accordance with regulations and policies.

Qualifications: Must have a high school diploma or equivalent. Must have experience in construction or building trades. Must have five years of experience in construction or a four-year degree in engineering or a related field.

Attorney

Agency: Department for Children and Families

Pay: Starting salary $73,500

Summary: This person will legally support the agency by carrying a full case load of appeals, as well as other various responsibilities of child in need of care cases.

Qualifications: Must have a Kansas law license and a valid driver’s license.
