Local and state agencies are investigating after a 2-year-old boy was found dead in a Monday evening house fire in rural Kansas.

First responders were called to the fire in 1500 block of 1400 Avenue near Navarre, a community of fewer than 60 people located about 90 miles north of Wichita, just before 6 p.m. on January 26.

When they arrived, the residence was fully engulfed in flames. Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office deputies found an adult male and child outside, according to initial reports.

Another child, a 2-year-old boy named Elijah, according to a GoFundMe for the family, was found dead inside the home once the fire was put out.

“The heartbreak and loss is unimaginable and the days and weeks ahead will be very difficult,” the GoFundMe biography read. More than $11,000 has been fundraised for the family as of Jan. 28.

The Office of the State Fire Marshal and the Sheriff’s Office are conducting a joint investigation into the cause of the fire.
