Do you live in one of Kansas’ wealthiest counties? Report says these are the top 10
Johnson County was recently named the No. 1 wealthiest county in Kansas by financial website SmartAsset, and Sedgwick County fell considerably in the ranking compared to 2024.
The report found Johnson County has a median income of $107,261, significantly higher than Kansas’ statewide median household income of $72,639.
The finance website used sources such as the U.S. Census Bureau, real estate site Zillow and the U.S. Internal Revenue Service to compile the ranking. The three metrics considered included investment income, median home value and median income. The most recent ranking reflects data updated in 2025.
SmartAsset developed a “wealth index” for each county, based on the three metrics, and counties are ranked by the index as opposed to only by income.
Sedgwick County’s performance dropped compared to 2024’s ranking, which named the county the 11th richest statewide. The 2025 analysis found Sedgwick County’s median income at $67,675, with a median home value of $189,254 and an investment income of $45,546. It ultimately ranked at No. 20 in the state in the most recent report.
Although residents of the Sunflower State’s wealthiest counties make significantly more than the statewide median income, Americans are paying more this year for groceries, utilities and other essentials. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reports the overall 12-month inflation rate is 2.7%, while some categories have seen steeper increases.
