I-70 between Goodland and Colby reopened after visibility and dust concerns

National Weather Service Wichita

The Kansas Department of Transportation has reopened both directions of traffic on I-70 between Goodland and Colby after closing the highway twice on Thursday because of intense winds and blowing dust.

The same strip of highway was the scene of a 71-vehicle crash that killed eight people in March when weather conditions similar to Thursday’s created a dust storm.

Thursday, the highway was first closed just after midnight. It reopened around 5 a.m. but was closed again about 10:20 a.m. Just after 2:30, the department ended the second closure and gave the all-clear for traffic to resume.

Live and additional updates on road closures and conditions can be found on the KanDrive website. Motorists can also call 511 if they’re in Kansas or 866-511-5368 if they are outside the state.
