Two dead, three hurt including baby, in head-on crash in Reno County
Authorities in Reno County say two people were killed and three others were hurt, including a baby, in a head-on collision Monday morning near Nickerson.
The names of the victims will not be released until their families are notified, the Reno County Sheriff’s Office said in a Facebook post.
The collision was reported around 10:14 a.m. in the 8200 block of North K-14 Highway, near 82nd Avenue.
The sheriff’s office said a silver Subaru SUV was northbound on the highway when the driver “crossed left of center and went into the southbound lane.” A red Ford F-150 truck that was southbound at the time pulled onto the right shoulder to try to avoid a collision.
But the Subaru “pulled on to that same shoulder and the vehicles collided head-on,” the sheriff’s office said.
Four people, including a baby, were inside the SUV when it crashed. Two of them died.
The infant and another person in the SUV were taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center and then to a Wichita hospital for treatment, the sheriff’s office said.
The sole occupant of the Ford truck was taken by private vehicle to Lyons Hospital. That person has non-life-threatening injuries.
The sheriff’s office said several citizens helped the victims and assisted with traffic control until law enforcement and other first responders arrived.
