Five dogs were shot to death and found discarded along a river bank Wednesday in southeast Kansas.

“Sheriff Ron Wade and the entire Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office are deeply disturbed and disgusted by a recent act of unimaginable cruelty discovered in the County,” the sheriff’s office said in a social media post Thursday.

Deputies responded Wednesday night to the Verdigris River at McTaggerts Dam, northwest of the town of Liberty.

They found five dogs, which appeared to be black Labradors, that had been brutally beaten, shot and left to die, according to the sheriff’s office.

“Discarded like trash, their lifeless bodies lying in the open for all to see,” the sheriff’s office said. “Let us be clear: this is not only a crime, but also an act of pure evil.”

The sheriff’s office did not immediately respond to an inquiry for more details.

No one is in custody and the sheriff’s office is encouraging anyone with information on the case to the call the sheriff’s office at 620-330-1000 or message their Facebook page. Callers will remain anonymous.
