Two people died when a house exploded Wednesday in Emporia, police said.

Authorities are working to identify them and notify their families.

First responders were called shortly before 5 p.m. to a home explosion at 1814 E 6th Avenue in the eastern part of the city, an Emporia city news release said.

“The home had collapsed, and was fully engulfed with fire within minutes,” the release added.

First responders dug through the rubble and discovered two bodies at about 8:30 p.m.

Investigators say the explosion appears to be accidental. The cause is being investigated by the Emporia Fire Department with help from the Kansas State Fire Marshal’s Office and Emporia police.
