Kansas man dies after being thrown from truck, run over by SUV on U.S. 54
A 44-year-old Kansas man died after he was thrown out of his truck and then run over by an SUV in southeast Kansas on Wednesday.
The man was identified as Scott Welch of Moran, Kansas Highway Patrol crash logs show.
Crash reports indicate Welch was injured in an accident before a second one led to his death.
The first accident was reported at 8:02 p.m. along U.S. 54 in Allen County. Welch was heading east on U.S. 54 hauling a bale of hay in a 2004 Ford F-250. The hay was obstructing his tail lights, the KHP report shows.
A 2006 Chevrolet Silverado also eastbound on U.S. 54 rear-ended Welch, causing the F-250 to spin counter-clockwise and overturn. Welch was thrown out of the truck and landed on the westbound lanes of U.S. 54, with the truck ending up in a ditch, the KHP said.
It is thought Welch sustained serious injuries. The driver of the Silverado, an 84-year-old man from Fort Scott, was not injured.
Three minutes later, while Welch was still on the highway, a 2018 Chevrolet Equinox westbound on U.S. 54 ran over him, the crash log said. Welch died at the scene.
The driver of the Equinox, a 22-year-old man from Gainesville, Texas, was not injured.
