Kansas man dies in wrong-way crash on highway; woman, child severely injured

A man died and a woman and a child were severely injured after a wrong-way crash Tuesday south of Winfield.

The man was identified as Walter J. Thurman, 91, of Arkansas City, Cowley County Sheriff Dave Falletti said.

The crash was reported at 9:53 a.m. on U.S. 77 near 71st Road, south of Winfield.

Thurman was heading north in the southbound lanes of U.S. 77 in a 2002 Dodge Dakota pickup truck when he struck a 2014 GMC Acadia head on, according to a Cowley County Sheriff’s Office news release.

Thurman died at the scene of the crash. The driver of the Acadia, a 32-year-old Arkansas City woman, and her young passenger were taken to William Newton Hospital with severe injuries, Falletti said.

Investigators are looking into what led to the accident.
