After being called to disturbance, Kansas deputy fatally shoots man
A 30-year-old man died Friday after being shot by a Kansas deputy who was responding to a disturbance call at a home.
The man was identified as Ty Kaiser, 30, the Kansas Bureau of Investigation said Saturday.
The incident started at 7:45 a.m. when the Gove County Sheriff’s Office responded to a call at 517 W. Third St. in Grainfield, Kansas.
A deputy entered the home and saw Kaiser in a “heated argument” with his father. The deputy learned that Kaiser had hit the 63-year-old man in the face, a KBI news release read.
The deputy asked Kaiser to “get down.” He initially complied but then stood back up and attempted to leave, ignoring the deputy’s commands. The deputy fired his taser at Kaiser, but it did not work.
“Kaiser then charged toward the deputy, hitting him in the head, face and body,” according to the KBI. “The deputy pulled out his firearm, and fired one round, striking Kaiser.”
The deputy performed life-saving measures until EMS arrived and took Kaiser to the hospital, where he died from his injuries. The deputy and Kaiser’s father were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries, the release said.
The deputy was released from the hospital Friday. Kaiser’s father was transferred to Hays hospital for further treatment. The investigation is ongoing, and findings will be given to the Gove County attorney.
Grainfield is a city of 322 and is about 246 miles northwest of Wichita.
