Kansas man dies, woman airlifted to Wichita after being thrown out of truck in crash

One man died and a woman was seriously inured after a rollover crash Sunday morning in southwest Kansas.

The victim was identified as Edgar Rios-Meraz, 22, of Satanta, Kansas Highway Patrol crash logs show.

The crash was reported at 5:53 a.m. at the intersection of U.S. 56 and Kansas 144, roughly four miles east of Copeland.

Rios-Meraz was heading east on 144 in a 2007 Dodge Ram 3500 when he failed to stop at the stop sign at the intersection, struck a Kansas Department of Transportation post, crossed over U.S. 56, entered a ditch and rolled one time, according to the KHP.

Rios-Meraz and his passenger, an 18-year-old woman, were thrown out of the truck. Rios-Meraz was taken to St. Catherine Hospital in Garden City where he died from his injuries, the report said.

The woman was taken to Wesley Trauma Center with serious injuries.
