A 17-year-old boy died Tuesday while in custody of the state of Kansas, authorities say.

The Dodge City teen was not identified, according to a Wednesday Kansas Bureau of Investigation news release.

The KBI was contacted Tuesday morning to investigate the death at the Northeast Kansas Regional Juvenile Detention Center in Junction City.

Facility personnel found the teen unresponsive at 6:50 a.m. and began life-saving measures. Geary County EMS was called and continued life-saving measures while heading to the hospital. The teen was pronounced deceased at 7:40 a.m., according to the KBI.

The teen had been at the detention center since early August stemming from a child in need of care case.

“By statute, the KBI investigates the deaths of prisoners in the custody of Kansas jails and prisons, and juveniles in state, county, or city custody, unless the person who dies is being regularly attended by a physician, or the death is ruled natural by autopsy,” the KBI said.

The investigation is ongoing and an autopsy has been scheduled.
