Topeka man sentenced in sex trafficking case

A Topeka man was sentenced to 14 years in federal prison after he was convicted of offering a 15-year-old girl for commercial sex, authorities said.

Dominique Emanuel Tyson, 25, pleaded guilty to one count of sex trafficking of a child, U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said in a statement Wednesday. In Tyson’s plea, he admitted he took a 15-year-old girl to a motel in June 2013 to meet a man who had seen her picture in an advertisement on Backpage.com.

Tyson did not know that the customer was working undercover for the Topeka Police Department and the FBI, Grissom said. Authorities launched an investigation after a community corrections officer called Topeka police to say the girl had run away from her placement.

The officer spotted a photo of her on Backpage.com, which listed her as an escort, Grissom said. An undercover investigator called the number on the advertisement and made arrangements to meet the girl at a Topeka motel.

Tyson dropped her off at the motel and drove away, Grissom said. Officers stopped his car and found a tablet computer with files containing the same photos of the girl that appeared in the ad.
