A Mega Millions player in Kansas won $1 million, narrowly missing the $681 million jackpot, lottery officials said.

The ticket matched five winning numbers in the drawing Tuesday, Sept. 3, but not the Mega Ball, according to the Kansas Lottery.

No one scored the $681 million jackpot prize, which will grow to an estimated $740 million with a cash prize of $366.3 million, for the Friday, Sept. 6, drawing, according to the Mega Millions site.

The winning numbers were 12, 41, 43, 52 and 55 with a Mega Ball 9. The $1 million ticket was sold in southeast Kansas.

More than 7,000 other tickets sold in Kansas also won prizes ranging from $2 to $500 in the drawing, the lottery said.

A Mega Millions ticket sold in Michigan also won a $1 million prize.

What to know about Mega Millions

To score the jackpot in the Mega Millions, a player must match all five white balls and the gold Mega Ball.

The odds of scoring a jackpot prize are 1 in 302,575,350.

Tickets cost $2 and can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times vary by state.
