Some of the cheapest gas prices in the country right now can be found in the Wichita area.

New data released Thursday by the American Automobile Association says the national average for a gallon of gas fell by a nickel in a week to $3.56. It’s the largest one-week drop for 2024 so far, according to AAA.

AAA reports that Kansas is one of the states with the lowest prices. The Sunflower State has the fourth cheapest market, with an average gas price of $3.10 per gallon.

“Gas prices will likely keep up this slow sag now that we are past the Memorial Day travel weekend and more locations, east of the Rockies, will be selling gas below $3 a gallon,” AAA spokesperson Andrew Gross said in a statement. “But it’s time to start weather watching as the Atlantic Hurricane Season begins June 1, and forecasters predict it will be very active. A storm impacting the Gulf Coast oil production and refining centers could push prices temporarily higher, so stay tuned.”

The state with the lowest average gas price is Mississippi, which costs $3.03 per gallon. The state with the most expensive gas price is California, where a gallon of gas costs $5.09.
