Do you have your Real ID yet? Deadline is approaching. Here’s how to get one in Kansas
The deadline to get a Real ID in order to fly in the United States is less than a year away.
Real IDs can be identified by a gold star in the top right corner. The requirement was first passed by lawmakers in 2005 with the purpose of setting a minimum security standard when it came to state-issued identification.
After the deadline, no one will be able to fly in the United States or enter any federal facilities that require identification unless they have the proper ID. That includes passports and permanent residence cards as well as state-issued Real IDs.
Other activities — like driving and purchasing liquor — do not need Real IDs.
The deadline has been pushed multiple times but now sits at May 7, 2025. If you already have the gold star, you don’t have to worry about doing anything to keep your credential. Otherwise, there are a few things you need to do in order to get this updated ID.
How can I get a Real ID in Kansas?
Kansans started being issued Real IDs in 2017. While it is currently not required, it’s a good idea to start the process to get one now instead of waiting.
Here’s a list of documents you have to bring to your local DMV location to get your Real ID issued:
A state birth certificate, up-to-date passport, resident card, employment authorization card, naturalization certificate or consular report of birth abroad.
Proof of your Social Security number — which can be your Social Security card, tax forms or any formal documentation with the number present.
Two proofs of your Kansas address in the last year, like a lease agreement or a utility bill.
Additionally, if you have changed your name since any of the documents above were issued, you have to provide proof of a legal name change — like a marriage certificate or name change documents.
These documents only need to be shown once when you initially receive the Real ID. They are not required for re-issuing. However, if you had a form of a Real ID in another state and are now applying for a Kansas one, you need the above documents again to get the gold star.
Anyone under the age of 18 does not need a valid form of ID if flying with someone else. If you already have a passport or permanent residence card, you can use that to fly.
If you’re not sure of the status of your driver’s license, you can check on the Kansas Department of Revenue’s online status check tool.
