Three children were killed in a Saturday morning crash involving a minivan and a semi on the Kansas Turnpike, according to Kansas Highway Patrol crash logs.

Amber Peery, 32, of Topeka, was in a 2018 Dodge van with five passengers, all children, when the van “went to turn through the barrier wall” shortly after 9 a.m. in Shawnee County, the crash log said. It was then struck by the semi.

Laila El Azari and Kylie Lund, both 9, and Brooklyn Peery, 8, all of Topeka, were killed in the crash. Amber Peery and two other children, ages 5 and 9, were taken to the hospital with injuries, according to the crash report.

The driver of the semi, 70-year-old Robert Russell of Huntsville, Alabama, was not injured in the wreck.
