An infant girl died after a house fire Wednesday afternoon in Hays, according to the Hays Fire Department.

The fire was reported around 3 p.m. and fire officials learned that a child was trapped inside the home while in route, a news release said.

Firefighters found the infant girl, who was taken to the Hays Medical Center where she later died of injuries from the fire.

A GoFundMe created by a friend of the girl’s family says she was 8 months old.

“I am raising money to help our friends bury their baby. ... It is a tragic time right now for them and could use all the help they can get,” said Jessica Schmidt, a family friend.

The cause of the fire is being investigated by the Kansas State Fire Marshall’s office.
