Kansas authorities identify man after his body was found in the Winfield City Lake

The Winfield Police Department identified a man after his body was retrieved from the Winfield City Lake around 4:49 p.m. on Tuesday, according to a Winfield police news release.

Winfield police say the body of John Sanford, 75, of Atlanta, Kansas, was retrieved after someone reported an unoccupied boat near the shoreline shortly after noon Tuesday.

Winfield police and the fire department responded to the call. Investigators think the boat was being operated by Sanford before becoming lodged on the bank, the release said.

Winfield and Ark City fire department boats began search efforts. Additional help was requested from other law enforcement agencies, the release said.

Divers later found Sanford’s body and no foul play is suspected at this time.
