Kansas inmate serving time on drug charges dies from COVID-19

A fifth Kansas inmate has died from COVID-19, the Kansas Department of Corrections said Thursday.

Junior Lee Chrismon tested positive on August 15 and was transferred from Larned Correctional Facility to a hospital, the department said.

The 68-year-old had underlying health conditions that contributed to his condition, according to the department. He died September 7.

In April 2019, Chrismon was sentenced to 52 months on drug charges from Montgomery County, records showed.

According to the Kansas Department of Corrections, 202 residents at Larned have contracted the virus.

COVID-19 cases have been found at all 10 of the department’s facilities. A total of 1,750 residents and 238 employees have tested positive. Four residents and two staff members from Lansing Correctional Facility and one employee from Topeka Correctional Facility have died from the virus.
