A candidate for the Neosho County Commission died Sunday after his motorcycle was hit by a car near Erie.

The Kansas Highway Patrol said a 79-year-old Parsons woman driving a Buick Regal crossed into the lane Christopher D. Ellis was riding in for “unknown reasons” and struck him with its passenger side around 1:45 p.m. The crash happened on highway U-59 about three miles north of Erie. Authorities say Ellis was driving a 2009 Harley Davidson north on the road and the Buick was southbound.

Ellis, of Erie, died from his injuries, according to a KHP report. The 31-year-old Republican candidate was running against incumbent David Orr for the Neosho County Commission seat in District 2.

The 79-year-old woman, Barbara A. Clingan, was hospitalized with possible minor injuries, the KHP said.

Erie is about 120 miles east of Wichita.
