Kansas police find meat cleaver, garrote after arrest of Great Bend man

Fourteen knives, including a meat cleaver, and garrote wire for strangling were found when officers stopped a Great Bend man Tuesday who was wanted in connection to a case in Hoisington. The man tried to pull a knife from his waistband before a Taser was used on him, the Barton County Sheriff’s Office said.

Timothy Charles Chism, 35, was arrested on suspicion of possession of methamphetamine and marijuana, drug paraphernalia, possession of weapons by a felon, obstruction of a law enforcement officer and introduction of contraband in a correctional facility. The Sheriff’s Office said a .380 pistol was found in a holster between Chism’s legs during a search when he was booked into jail. He was also booked on charges of aggravated assault and aggravated domestic battery in the Hoisington case.

The Hoisington incident took place Monday night, the Sheriff’s Office said. Barton County and Great Bend detectives were also looking for Chism, who was “armed and should be considered dangerous,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

Officers found Chism riding in the passenger seat of a Nissan Pathfinder on Tuesday in Great Bend.

“A felony car stop was conducted at which time Chism attempted to resist arrest,” a news release from the Sheriff’s Office said. “At one point he reached for a knife in his waistband and a Taser was deployed. Sheriff’s deputies were able to handcuff Chism.”

Officers found “14 knives, including a meat cleaver, a garrote,” drugs and drug paraphernalia during the arrest.
