Trio of earthquakes shake Marion County, Kansas geologists say

A trio of earthquakes shook in the Flint Hills of central Kansas between Tuesday night and Wednesday evening, geologists report.

The Kansas Geological Survey recorded the first of the three earthquakes at around 11:45 p.m. Tuesday. It was a 3.3 magnitude. The second was a 2.7 magnitude at around 12:05 a.m. Wednesday. It was followed by a 3.4 magnitude at around 5:19 p.m.

All three quakes were centered in the same general area, near the intersection of Alfalfa Road and 220th Street. That’s less than 10 miles northeast of Marion and about 3 miles from the Chase County line.

The U.S. Geological Survey asks those who felt the ground shake to report it online.

At 3.4, Wednesday evening’s earthquake was the second-strongest to hit Marion County in the past year. The strongest was a 3.6 magnitude in September. Kansas Geological Survey data shows 14 earthquakes were recorded in the county in 2019, and six have been recorded so far in 2020.
