Public hearing set on Kansas’ proposed gun signs
A public hearing about gun-sign regulations will be held this week in Topeka. The signs for buildings were proposed after Kansas’ new gun laws took effect July 1.
The hearing will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday in the second floor auditorium of Memorial Hall, 120 SW 10th Ave. The signs may be used to restrict carrying firearms – open, concealed or both – into buildings, according to a news release issued by Kansas Attorney General Derek Schmidt.
State law requires a 60-day comment period and public hearing before the sign regulations can become permanent. Schmidt has been accepting public comment on the proposed rules since they were published July 10.
Schmidt’s office, however, will continue to take public comment through Wednesday. That can be done on the attorney general’s website at ag.ks.gov, by e-mail at ksagcc@ag.ks.gov or by mail to Schmidt’s office at 120 SW 10th Ave., Topeka, KS 66612.
To see the proposed signs, go to the attorney general’s website.
The signs were created after Schmidt met with stakeholders in May.
The Legislature passed the new regulations in the last session. No signs are necessary if the building owner allows both open and concealed carry.
