This Kansas boy was named a 911 Hero. Then he got to be police chief for a day

Miles Harris was playing outside of his grandparents house as they were working on their house.

As his grandparents were working, the scaffolding collapsed and his grandparents fell off of it.

The 9-year-old quickly ran inside and called 911 for help, according to a Facebook post by the city of Topeka.

“He stayed calm in the face of danger... ,” the Topeka Police Department posted on Facebook.

Miles’ grandma is still in the hospital with a brain injury, but his grandpa was able to come home despite a broken arm and ribs.

“Miles became the 911 Hero after his quick thinking helped save his grandparents lives,” the city posted.

As a 911 Hero, Topeka police Chief Bill Cochran handed over his badge to Miles, making the 9-year-old police Chief Miles Harris for all of Wednesday.

As chief, Miles got to tour the police department and see different divisions, including the motorcycle unit, bike unit and SWAT vehicles. He also got to operate one of the bomb squad’s robots and take over Cochran’s media duties when he was interviewed by local TV stations.

“Miles said he had a ‘very good time’ and was especially excited to finish off the day with pizza,” the city posted. “Great job, Miles!”
