Barton County sheriff ordered to appear in court

Barton County Sheriff Brian Bellendir has been ordered to appear in Barton County District Court following an investigation by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

According to the summons issued on Wednesday, Bellendir is alleged to have mistreated a confined person while serving an arrest warrant on Aug. 10 in Great Bend, a statement issued by the KBI said.

Kansas statutes define a confined person as someone who is confined or detained by a law enforcement officer or in a correctional institution. Mistreatment of a confined person is a misdemeanor offense in Kansas.
