The Kansas Highway Patrol has identified the man who died when his semi overturned and caught fire near McPherson on Wednesday afternoon.

John Douglas Schrock, 48, of Hesston, was driving southbound on K-153 just south of McPherson shortly after 3:45 p.m. Wednesday.

According to a Kansas Highway Patrol crash log, the vehicle was traveling too fast to negotiate a curve in the roadway, causing it to strike the median. It then rolled across the northbound lanes and came to rest in the east ditch, where it caught fire.

Rescue workers were not able to get in the vehicle until about an hour after the crash, as officials were advising Wednesday to let the fire burn out before moving in.

The semi was thought to be carrying diesel fuel or another type of oil, officials said Wednesday.
