California man competing in bike race killed in Kansas crash

A bicyclist from California competing in a race across the U.S. was killed in a crash Saturday night near Leoti, according to a Kansas Highway Patrol crash report.

Eric Fishbein, 61, of San Luis Obispo, Calif., was pronounced dead after the Trek bicycle he was riding along K-96 east of Leoti was hit from behind by a 2014 Honda Accord being driven by a 25-year-old Hays woman.

According to an online roster for the cross-country Trans Am Bike Race, an Eric Fishbein from San Luis Obispo was competing in the 4,300-mile race, which began June 3.

Fishbein was traveling east on K-96 about 8 miles east of Leoti in Wichita County when he was struck just after 10 p.m. on Saturday, the crash report said. A 27-year-old man and a 2-year-old boy were also in the car at the time of the crash.
