Hays Middle School could require students to lock away cellphones

Students at Hays Middle School could be required to lock away their cellphones during the school day beginning this fall, according to a report.

Cristina Janney of the Hays Post reports that the Board of Education for District 489 is scheduled to vote later this month on a policy change that would require all students to secure cellphones in their lockers from just after 8 a.m. until just after 3 p.m. The policy would be in effect for every school day.

According to the published agenda for the board’s meeting this past Monday, a student’s parent would be required to pick up their child’s cellphone after a second offense of the policy. After a third offense, the student would “lose their right to have a cellphone at school for the remainder of the school year,” according to the policy.

Janney reported that the district has plans to order new padlocks for securing the cellphones. The board is scheduled to meet next on June 26.
