Reno County deputy, wife die from injuries in motorcycle accident

A Reno County sheriff’s jail deputy and his wife have died from injuries they received Saturday in a motorcycle accident in Great Bend.

Jail Deputy Shawn Schellenger died shortly after noon Sunday. His wife, Danielle, died Saturday.

The Hutchinson News reported that the couple was riding a motorcycle in the 5600 block of 10th Street in Great Bend at 11:40 a.m. Saturday when a trailer being pulled by a pickup truck came loose and struck the Schellengers’ motorcycle.

The two were taken by Life Watch to Via Christi Hospital St. Francis.

On Saturday, Reno County Sheriff Randy Henderson posted this message on Facebook: “It is with great sadness that I report a tragedy in the Reno County Sheriff’s Office Family. ... At approximately 2:30 p.m., Danielle passed away from her injuries. ... Please keep all parties in this tragic event in your prayers.”

A Reno County sheriff’s deputy told The Eagle that Shawn Schellenger was 27. He had served in the U.S. Army in Iraq for 18 months before returning home to Kansas. He had also worked at the Butler County Sheriff’s Office before being hired nearly a year ago by Reno County.

The Hutchinson News reported that the couple is survived by two children ages 5 and 7.
