Brownback appoints Jeff Dewey, unopposed in November, to 18th District Court

Gov. Sam Brownback announced the appointment of Jeff Dewey as a judge of the 18th District Court on Wednesday, following Dewey’s victory in the Tuesday primary.

No Democrat filed to oppose Dewey in the general election in November.

In addition to Dewey’s appointment, the governor also announced the judicial appointments of Blake Bittel, of Hays, to the 23rd District and Steven Santala, of Satanta, as magistrate judge in the 26th District.

“I am pleased to appoint Jeff Dewey, Blake Bittel, and Steven Santala to district court positions,” Brownback said in a news release. “They each bring strong backgrounds and experience to the bench and will serve their fellow Kansans well.”

Dewey overcame challenges from Quentin Pittman and Robert Holubec in Tuesday’s primary, prevailing with 51 percent of the vote, according to unofficial election results. Pittman had 39 percent; Holubec, 10 percent.

Dewey is in private practice with Dewey & Lund. He is a graduate of Wichita State University and Washburn University School of Law. He will fill the vacancy created by the resignation of Judge Douglas Roth.
