U.S. Sen. Ted Cruz officially filed for the Kansas Republican caucus Tuesday.

Cruz, the tea party Republican from Texas, is the fifth candidate to pay the $15,000 to file for the caucus, which is scheduled for March 5.

“Kansas plays an important role early in the nominating process, which is why we are focusing on earning the support of every delegate,” Cruz said in a news release. “Courageous conservatives are coalescing around our campaign and I expect our team to be very competitive in the caucus.”

Cruz was among the national Republican figures to travel to Kansas in 2014 to help U.S. Sen. Pat Roberts’ re-election campaign. That fact was noted by Kansas GOP chair Kelly Arnold, who said Kansas Republicans “are still grateful for Senator Cruz coming to Kansas last October 2014 to campaign for the ultimately victorious Republican candidates.”
