Planning to vote by mail in Wichita’s sales tax election? You’re running out of time

Early voting is open for Wichita’s special election — one in which city voters will decide whether to implement a 1% sales tax — and an important deadline falls next week.

The sales tax proposal will be on the Tuesday, March 3 ballot and, if approved, would bring in $850 million over the next seven years. Wichita would join several of its suburbs in having such a tax, including Derby, Haysville, Maize and Park City.

The revenue would go toward several projects, including revitalizing Century II, a convention center expansion, public safety projects, expanding homeless services and offering property tax relief.

You can vote early in-person, at your polling place on Election Day or by mail. But if you want to participate by mail, you don’t have much longer to request your ballot.

Voters have until Tuesday, Feb. 24 to apply online for a mail-in ballot. The advance ballot application is available on the Kansas Secretary of State’s website.

Once you complete your mail-in ballot, it must be returned to the election office by 7 p.m. Election Day.

Mail-ballots can be returned via the U.S. Postal Service or to one of seven community drop boxes open for the special election.

Drop boxes available for the sales tax election are:

  • Alford Branch Library (3447 S. Meridian St.)
  • Boston Park Recreation Center (6655 E. Zimmerly)
  • Evergreen Park Recreation Center (2700-D N. Woodland)
  • Edgemoor Park Recreation Center (5815 E. 9th St.)
  • Orchard Park Recreation Center (4808 W. 9th St.)
  • Linwood Park Recreation Center (1901 S. Kansas)
  • Sedgwick County Courthouse (525 N. Main)

Early voting is open at the Sedgwick County Courthouse now through Monday, March 2. Additional satellite early voting locations open Thursday, Feb. 26.
