Want to vote in Wichita’s sales tax election? Don’t miss crucial Tuesday deadline

Next month, Wichita voters will head to the polls to decide whether or not the city should adopt a 1% sales tax — and the deadline to vote in that election is this week.

Those residing in Wichita city limits and not registered to vote must do so by Tuesday, Feb. 10 in order to cast a ballot in the Tuesday, March 3 special election.

Wichita voters can register online on the Kansas Department of Revenue’s website, by mail or in person at the Sedgwick County election office. Voters must be 18 years of age or older and have a valid driver’s license or identification card to register.

Voters who have moved, changed their name or want to change their party affiliation have to follow the same process.

If you’re unsure if you’re registered to vote in Kansas, you can check your status on the Kansas Secretary of State’s VoterView portal by entering your full name and date of birth.

March 3 special election dates

Here are dates to know ahead of the sales tax vote in Wichita:

  • Wednesday, Feb. 11: Election office starts sending advanced mail-in ballots
  • Tuesday, Feb. 17: First day of early, in-person voting at the Sedgwick County election office begins
  • Tuesday, Feb. 24: Last day to apply for an advanced ballot
  • Thursday, Feb. 26: First day of early, in-person voting at satellite offices
  • Monday, March 2: Last day to vote early at the Sedgwick County election office, which closes at noon
  • March 3: Election Day — vote at your assigned polling place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

If you wait to cast your vote, be sure to check your polling place ahead of time. That’s because 10% of eligible Wichita voters will vote at a different spot, the county announced earlier this year. Eleven traditional polling places will be unavailable and moved to different sites, either for cost-efficiency reasons or scheduling conflicts.

You can check your polling place on the Kansas Secretary of State’s VoterView portal.
