Elections

Here’s who’s running in Sedgwick County’s 2020 primary election

As candidates filed a flurry of last-minute paperwork to jump into the 2020 race Monday, several local elections look to be competitive this year while others will have a single candidate.

Kansas Senate President Susan Wagle, who dropped out of the U.S. Senate race last week, did not file to run for re-election in the Kansas legislature.

While positioning to run for U.S. Senate, the Wichita Republican has positioned herself as chief nemesis to Gov. Laura Kelly and has blocked Medicaid expansion in an attempt to put an anti-abortion amendment to the state constitution on a statewide ballot.

Wagle’s decision not to file and former Sedgwick County District Attorney Nola Foulston’s last-second withdrawal from the District 30 race representing east Wichita shut down what could have been one of the most competitive races in the state.

That race could still garner attention and spending from both local parties.

Melissa Gregory, former aide to Democrat Dan Glickman, when he was a U.S. Congressman and as Bill Clinton’s Secretary of Agriculture, will square off with Amy Lyon, who placed fourth in the Wichita mayoral primary last summer, in the Democratic primary. The winner will face state Rep. Renee Erickson, R-Wichita.

The Sedgwick County Commission race could also prove to be a dogfight, as Democrats try to gain a majority on a board long held by conservatives.

Republicans are also looking to challenge seats that have been held by Democrats for decades. For the first time in over 20 years, the Republican party has placed a candidate in every Sedgwick County state house and senate race.

Lacey Cruse is the sole Democrat on the Sedgwick County Commission. Mike Iuen, retired KAKE News anchor, and Sarah Lopez, a healthcare worker, both Democrats, are looking to replace Republican commissioners David Dennis and Michael O’Donnell, who face challengers from within the their own party this August.

Republicans Cindy Miles, a longtime member of various nonprofit and government boards and a commissioner on the Metropolitan Area Planning Commission from Wichita, and Kathleen Garrison, a data analyst and former court reporter from Haysville, will square off with O’Donnell this summer.

In District 3, Dennis will have a Republican primary challenger in Hunter Larkin, a Goddard City Council member.

Sedgwick County’s two top law enforcement officials — District Attorney Marc Bennett and Sheriff Jeff Easter, both Republicans — are running unopposed.
