Rock the Vote ICT will register voters, offer details on candidates

Rock the Vote ICT, an event to register voters and hear from candidates of all parties and backgrounds, will be from noon to 4 p.m. on Oct. 11 at McAdams Park, 1329 E. 13th St.

The event, which will combine musical entertainment, voter registration and information from political candidates, is being organized by Community Operations Recovery Empowerment (CORE) Inc.

The deadline to register to vote before the Nov. 4 general election is Oct. 14.

Rock the Vote is a nationwide organization that started in 1990. It particularly advocates for youth to vote and become politically active through events across the country.

Brandon Johnson, executive director of CORE, said the event is free and all citizens over 18 will be registered to vote before they can enter. Those who have not yet registered in Kansas should bring their birth certificate or U.S. passport.

“We want to engage more of the community in the political process and the issues,” Johnson said. “We want to let people to know they have the opportunity to vote and they should vote.”

Several politicians for local and state races have confirmed their attendance at the event, Johnson said. There will also be representatives from both sides of the 1-cent-on-the-dollar sales tax question that will be on the November ballot.

Music will be provided by DJ 3, DJ Detroit, DJ P-Know, Big Sam, Cadence, S.E. Trill, Bo Pessi and Adam Capps, among other artists, Johnson said.

Other event hosts include the Community Voice, Kansas People’s Action, and I’ve Got Your Back (IGYB), Johnson said.
