Wichita school district residents will choose two school board members in the April 7 election.

In the race for an at-large seat, incumbent Sheril Logan, a retired educator, faces challenger Michael Capps, chief executive of a technology consulting firm and parent of a student.

In the race in District 4 in the south and southwest parts of the district, incumbent Jeff Davis has said he will not campaign for re-election. He said he would not have filed to run again if he had known that his opponent, business owner Joshua Blick, was running.

District 3 board member Barb Fuller is unopposed in her quest for another term.

Logan said in her written voter guide response that she wants to continue giving back and use her “past experience, time, and talents to help this large urban district continue to advance forward. … USD 259 must never lose sight of continuing to raise student achievement even while reducing the budget.”

Capps said he is running because, in a time of changing education funding in Kansas, he believes “we can not only function with our existing resources, I believe we can succeed. … I believe I can bring a fresh approach to building success for our students and community.”

Blick said many difficult decisions lie ahead for the district. “The outcome of these decisions will influence how the district develops as a community. They will affect what education will look like for a generation of students. Our schools need experience and vision. … I’m committed to stand up for our students’ needs and foster new relationships with our local businesses and communities.”
