Jennifer Winn pursues write-in campaign for mayor
Jennifer Winn, who did not advance in the Wichita mayoral primary earlier this month, is pursuing a write-in campaign for mayor in the April 7 election.
“The momentum seems to be there,” Winn said. “I’m a fighter through and through, and if there is even a little ray of hope, I’m going to go after it.”
Winn received 10 percent of the vote in the mayoral primary, which was not enough to advance to the general election next month.
City Council member Jeff Longwell and retired advertising executive Sam Williams won the primary, with 28 and 25 percent of the vote, respectively.
Previously, Winn ran against Gov. Sam Brownback in the Republican primary and garnered 37 percent of the vote, but it was not enough to win the primary.
The decision to pursue a write-in campaign came from the prompting of supporters who were not happy with the outcome of the March 3 primary, Winn said.
“We’re going to pursue every avenue possible” to win, she said.
For the next few weeks, she and supporters will continue a grassroots campaign, she said, including meet-and-greets and signs at intersections across town.
Winn said supporters can meet her at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at Mead’s Corner, 430 E. Douglas, for more information.
