Satellite election centers will open Tuesday throughout Sedgwick County, offering residents more opportunities to vote early.

And Sedgwick County’s election commissioner, Tabith Lehman, is encouraging residents to do just that, if they can.

More than 37,000 residents have already mailed in their ballots, and more than 4,300 have voted at the Sedgwick County Historic Courthouse, 510 N. Main, using voting machines and paper ballots.

“Those ballots get counted first,” Lehman said. “We have 60 people in here counting them now.”

The results won’t be released until polls close on election night Nov. 8, she said.

“We are significantly up from where we were in 2012 with in-person voting,” Lehman said. “We are down by comparison in mail-in ballots from elections in 2008 and 2012.”

In 2008 and 2012, more than 40,000 Sedgwick County residents used mail-in ballots.

More Kansas voters are voting earlier than in past elections, she said. “We are seeing a change in behavior.”
