Your guide to the House District 92 race

Democratic Rep. Nile Dillmore faces a third challenge from Republican James Woomack in House District 92 in north-central Wichita.

Dillmore, 63, a land/home development specialist, has been a legislator since 2001. In a written response to questions from The Eagle, he said he believes government has a legitimate role in influencing lives for the better and he wants to “continue to bring a reasoned and civil voice to that discussion.”

Woomack, 61, is retired from the U.S. Navy and Hawker Beechcraft. He said he wants to “get people back to work, put the state on path to recovery, stream line government, reform education funding, reduce debt and maintain programs.”

In 2008, Dillmore collected 59 percent of the vote to Woomack’s 36 percent.

Kansas' 125 state representatives are elected to two-year terms. They develop and debate laws and approve the state's budget during a 90-day legislative session. They are paid $88.66 a day and get $116 a day in expenses while in session or attending interim committee meetings.

1. We need to focus on:

* Insuring the children of Kansas have a world class education to compete in global markets

* Facing up to our responsibility to fund our retirement system

* Provide the funding necessary to meet our moral obligation to care for disabled, the frail and weak.

2. The sales tax will expire in 2013 and I will not support extending that sunset. I will not support repeal before that date.

3. I have supported and introduced legislation that would increase the penalties on those who knowingly hire illegal immigrants. I believe this is the most direct course we can take to stem the incentive to migrate illegally.

1. Stop further tax increases and government regulations. Reduce debt. Evaluate each state program individually to determine its necessity, then base the funding level on funding level required to run program effectively instead of basing the budget off previous years. Eliminate duplication of programs and services while realizing cost savings.

2. I support the repeal of the 1-cent sales tax. As with most taxes it is not explained to the citizens clearly. There is a 6/10 a cent three-year sales tax and a 4/10 of a cent tax that does not end for road repair. Like most citizens in the state, I wonder what is happening to the road taxes that the state already collects. It's already 10 cents higher per gallon then the states around Kansas.

3. Legal immigration is a blessing to this country. Preserving that promise of America for future generations requires that we protect the sovereignty of our country and secure our borders. Illegal immigration is not compatible with this goal. Immigration is a federal law. If the law needs to be changed then the federal government needs to do it.
