Kansas AG: $9.8 million recovered last year in fighting Medicaid fraud

Medicaid fraud enforcement efforts by the Kansas Attorney General’s Office led to the recovery of more than $9.8 million in taxpayer dollars last fiscal year.

Nearly all of that amount – $9.4 million – represents the federal and state shares of global settlement cases pursued in conjunction with the National Association of Medicaid Fraud Control Units, according to the Medicaid Fraud and Abuse Division’s annual report to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The division is apart of the attorney general’s office.

The division also recovered $138,930 from restitution ordered in criminal cases and another $300,000 in civil judgments, the annual report said.

The fiscal year ran from July 1, 2015, to June 30.

During that time, the division closed or completed 72 cases, the report said. Just over half – 38 – were closed without prosecution or litigation.

The division still had 124 cases open as of June 30 and incurred $1.28 million in direct and indirect costs, according to the report.

The Kansas Attorney General’s Office has recovered more than $109 million through its Medicaid fraud recovery efforts since 2011, according to a news release announcing the recoveries.

Suspected Medicaid fraud and abuse can be reported online at www.ag.ks.gov or by calling 866-551-6328.
