Former mayoral candidate Sam Williams will lead a new effort to review procedures for estimating state revenue, according to a news release.

Williams is a retired chief financial officer with Sullivan Higdon and Sink, an advertising firm.

The announcement comes days after the state missed revenue estimates for May by $74.5 million, putting it in a budget hole again for the fiscal year that ends June 30.

Budget Director Shawn Sullivan will work with Williams to discuss process, schedule and structure for the review, according to the release.

The review team will evaluate the revenue estimating process, make recommendations for improving the quality of fiscal notes and analyzing existing tax policies.

Williams faced off against Jeff Longwell in the spring 2015 mayoral election. Longwell won the race.

Williams was not immediately available for comment.
