Kansas bill makes it illegal to harass someone with a drone

It would be illegal to harass people with drones under a bill unanimously approved by the Kansas Senate on Wednesday.

SB 462 stems from a dispute between neighbors in Olathe.

Sen. Rob Olson, R-Olathe, said one family in his district has been harassed repeatedly by a neighbor flying a drone around their property.

Olson said lawmakers watched video in committee that showed the drone flying all around the family’s property in an invasive manner. But when the family called police for help, they were told nothing could be done.

The bill expands the definition of harassment in the state’s Protection From Stalking Act to “include any course of conduct carried out through the use of an unmanned aerial system over or near any dwelling, occupied vehicle or other place where one may reasonably expect to be safe from uninvited intrusion or surveillance.”
