Bill requiring more financial info from school districts falls in House
A bill that would have required school districts to provide more financial information about their budgets failed to pass in the House on Friday.
The vote was 58-61.
The bill would require districts to prominently publish a link to their budget information on their websites. They’d also be required to post more information about employee compensation.
“This bill would provide transparency for millions of taxpayer dollars,” said Rep. Jerry Lunn, R-Overland Park.
But opponents called parts of the bill heavy handed.
“The fine on school districts for failure to comply seemed awfully high and it seemed a little bit onerous,” said Rep. Stephanie Clayton, R-Overland Park.
Districts would have been fined $1,000 a day for not complying with the bill.
