Kansas tax amnesty program deadline is Oct. 15

The state’s giving Get Out of Jail Free cards to Kansans who pay their back taxes by Oct. 15.

Tuesday marks the first day of a six-week tax amnesty program that waives all interest and penalties for unpaid taxes.

The Legislature approved the tax amnesty program in hopes of raising $30 million. Jeannine Koranda, public information officer for the Kansas Department of Revenue, said the estimate came from past experience.

Koranda said the Department of Revenue last hosted an amnesty program in 2010.

She said Kansans should take advantage of the amnesty, because “there’s no guarantee that a program like this will ever come up again.”

If the plan doesn’t work, it could translate to more budget cuts. Koranda said an estimated $274.8 million in tax debt is eligible for the amnesty.

People and corporations that want to use the program need to submit an application to the Department of Revenue and pay the debt by Oct. 15 to avoid the penalties and interest.

Koranda said fees could vary for individuals and companies that pay only a portion of the back taxes.
