As Sedgwick County closes its Kellogg tag office, it’s set to open two new full-service satellite locations next week.

The locations will be open, by appointment only, starting Tuesday. They’re located in the county treasurer’s office in the Ruffin Building downtown and at Haysville City Hall. Appointments can be made online.

On that same day, the county will close the Kellogg tag office, moving all its operations to the west side of town at 2525 W. Douglas.

The moves come as Sedgwick County residents are experiencing longer than normal wait times at tag office locations.

County Treasurer Brandi Baily previously said the consolidation of the two main tag offices was necessary as it pressures the state of Kansas to make several changes for the state-mandated offices, including higher fees to cover the county’s cost to operate them.

“These satellite locations allow us to meet our constituents where they are at a time of high demand for title work, personalized plates and renewals,” Baily said in a news release. “Sedgwick County Tag Offices process around 3,100 transactions daily, and this expansion allows us to support our residents with more options.”

The satellite locations offer several of the same services the county’s larger tag offices do, including title work and renewals, but are by appointment only.

Baily said another satellite location will open this fall at the Sedgwick County Extension Office at 21st and Ridge. She’s also eyeing two additional satellite locations. She’s also looking at extending hours of operation at some of those locations.

The county said the lines are driven by personalized plate renewals and increased vehicle sales as it also contends with the state to update the MOVRS System, a software system that serves state tag offices.

According to the county, that system hasn’t been updated since 2007, when it was implemented, and stores data from all 105 Kansas counties. The system crashes almost weekly, Baily said.

The county already has three other satellite locations:

  • Kansas Drivers Licensing Derby, 620 N. Rock Road, Suite 300, Derby, KS 67037
  • Wichita West Kansas Driver Licensing, 610 S. Tyler Road, Wichita, KS 67209
  • Park City City Hall, 1941 E. 61st St. North, Park City, KS 67219

The county is also encouraging residents to renew their tags online, if they’re able to, to avoid lines at the tag office. It also says paperwork can be mailed in or use the county’s dropbox.
