The end is yet to be in sight for Sedgwick County’s in-person credit card payment issues, which is affecting the county’s tag offices, among other places.

The system has been down for several days now, with some issues starting earlier than that.

Sedgwick County staff told county commissioners during a special meeting Thursday that the issue began when its credit card vendor, Municipal Services Bureau, migrated to a cloud system.

“There’s absolutely nothing that the county could have done any differently in this scenario to have prevented this,” county Chief Financial Officer Lindsay Poe Rousseau said. “This is solely with the vendor.”

The outage has impacted several county departments, including both of the county’s tag offices.

It’s unclear whether this is affecting government offices outside Sedgwick County.

“We hit a snag here for the last two weeks, which is unacceptable,” the county’s Chief Information Officer, Scott Wagner, said.

According to Wagner, the county has been using MSB as its credit card vendor for more than seven years without issue.

The county hit an additional snag with the vendor when it began to prepare a backup system to start taking card payments again, but then realized the county had an exclusivity agreement with MSB.

A new agreement was recently reached so the county could have a backup while MSB works to get its systems back online.

“We are working very hard to get that set up as soon as possible,” Poe Rousseau said. “It will still take some time to get all of that set up and then, obviously, to get all the programming on the back end for that done.

“So we still need to ask for patience. We don’t know when this will be completely resolved.”

The county said it’s still able to take cash or check payments and that web payments are still operational.

County commissioners called for a review of the system during their update from staff.

“The pain is really great, and I don’t know what we could have done,” Commissioner Jim Howell said, “but I want to reflect on that idea. What could we have done differently to avoid this type of pain in the future?”
